With well over a hundred technical staff, AECOM’s Acoustic Group is among the largest acoustics practices in the world. From its offices in Europe, Australia, America, Canada, the Middle East and Far East, the Group advises clients on building acoustics, environmental acoustics, noise mapping, vibration and audio-visual design. In the UK, the Group has fifty members of staff in eight offices.
The Acoustics Group within AECOM provides independent acoustic consultancy services on numerous prestigious projects within the built environment, including arts, culture and media; education; residential; commercial and healthcare. AECOM is a member of the Association of Noise Consultants and a sponsor of the Institute of Acoustics.
If you are self-motivated and capable, can demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and good communication skills, you will quickly be given increasing responsibility across a variety of project types and sizes in order to maximize your learning. This role will provide a valuable insight into architectural and building acoustics.
These placements would particularly suit a student part way through their degree course.
Primarily focus will be towards architectural and building services acoustics
Assist with environmental acoustics on occasion
Conducting field measurements as needed to document acoustical data
Noise and vibration measurements
Calculation and assessment of building and architectural acoustics
Computer modelling predictions and optimisations
This placement will enable the business to develop talent and establish relationships with promising students at an early stage in their careers. Placement students will work on a range of projects for a wide variety of clients, ensuring real opportunities for personal growth and career progression as they develop professionally, working within a positive culture where learning and development is actively supported and promoted.
Following this period of work experience students students returning back to University may be offered a place on our graduate sponsorship programme when they will be expected to act as ambassadors by promoting opportunities at AECOM to others fellow students..
Should you eventually progress onto a permanent full time role within the business under graduate development scheme we will provide you with the tools and support you need to achieve your professional development ambitions, including chartership with the relevant international professional institution – where we have graduates working towards over 30 professional institutions in the UK. We demand the highest standards and expect our graduates to pass their professional review first time.
You will be assigned a mentor to support & guide your development, and undertake regular training modules throughout the programme. There will be on-the-job and classroom training where required, and the opportunity to work on live client projects, with significant multi-disciplinary exposure.
Applications are welcomed from students who:
Have completed a minimum of one year of a BSc degree or are about to commence a MSc in acoustics (or audio, physics, architecture, mechanical) and are on track for a attaining a 2.1 or above (or equivalent)
Demonstrate ambitions to becoming a corporate member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and ultimately a Chartered Engineer – ideally already a student member of the IOA
Are high motivated individuals with excellent communication and report writing skills
Those who are competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
Show strong attention to detail with effective time management skills
Demonstrate a willingness to travel and occasionally work out of normal office hours
Hold a full driving licence – the role will involve a significant amount of travel to site locations with equipment
Previous work experience in the field of acoustics
Confidence with a foreign language.
