Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated intern for employment in the transportation department in the Roanoke, VA office. As an intern in the transportation department, you will assist in the design and inspection of various highway structures.

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform assignments requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria to carry out engineering tasks

  • Prepare engineering related calculations

  • Perform quantity takeoffs and cost estimates

  • Review shop drawings

  • Assist in the inspection of bridges, culverts, and tunnels

  • Prepare details for construction drawings using CAD software

  • Work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member

  • Periodic travel within Virginia may be required

Minimum Requirements


  • Currently enrolled as a Junior/Senior student in an ABET accredited civil engineering program

  • Minimum years of experience: None

Technical Skills:

  • Completed courses related to statics, strength of materials, introductory steel design, and introductory reinforced concrete design

  • Ability to follow procedures and pay attention to detail

  • Good written and oral communications skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD

  • Certificates: Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in developing calculations using software like Excel or Mathcad

  • Interest in bridge design is desired
